“Commuting takes most of my free time, and it leaves me feeling drained and isolated – it’s not just my schedule that’s suffers, but my well-being.”

— Olivia Chen, Sydney based interviewee

Overview

Olivia is one of several interviewees we spoke to who expressed the impact that a long, daily commute has on her mental health and her personal time. Unexpected delays and heavy rain can further increase stress and unhappiness.

Unmind was designed to add calm and peace to the hectic lives of working commuters. I had the opportunity to work with a small team over a two month timeframe to research the needs of commuters and design a solution for them.

“The multitude of different features means that if someone isn’t comfortable meditating in a public space, they still have other options, such as journaling, sound bowls, ambient music, to help ease their anxiety.”

— Marianne Liu, UTS FEIT (2023)

Reflections

I grew significantly working on this project, in my design skills and workflows. Some key learnings and achievements include:

  • Refined design process: I collaborated with a new team to design the Unmind app, where I optimized my workflow to save time and deliver more professional prototypes.
  • Incorporated AI tools into the workflow: I integrated AI technology into my design process, enhancing efficiency and creativity. This helped me experiment with new tools that directly contributed to improving my overall output.
  • Iterative research and design improvements: Performing multiple rounds of user research with prototypes allowed for significant improvements and a clear image of user needs.
  • Advanced usability testing techniques: My experiences in usability testing taught me the importance of conducting tests in optimal environments.

These learnings have broadened my perspective and highlighted areas of interest for future learning.

Next Steps

If we were to continue working on Unmind, some potential next steps that come to mind are the following:

  • Address any minor feedback items we didn’t have time to design
  • Survey users for interest and ideas for content to include beyond what we already have in each section
    • What other interactive meditations and guided meditations would people like to see? What about ambient mixes?
    • What kind of prompts are we missing in the journal?

After addressing these items, we could start collecting content for development!
